A weighted average gives more influence to work that is worth more. An exam worth 70% of a module matters more than coursework worth 30%. A 40-credit project usually matters more than a 10-credit module. A final year worth 70% of the degree matters more than a second year worth 30%.
The easiest way to understand the calculation is to work through it in layers. Calculate each module first, then each academic year, then the overall degree estimate.
Layer 1: calculate a module mark
Suppose a module has two assessments:

Multiply each mark by its weighting, then add the results:
(68 × 0.60) + (74 × 0.40) = 70.4
The module mark is 70.4%. The coursework does not simply count as one of two equal marks because it is worth 40%, while the exam is worth 60%.
Layer 2: calculate a credit-weighted year average
Modules usually have credit values. Credits represent the size of a module, so a larger module normally contributes more to the year average.

Multiply each module mark by its credits, add those values, then divide by the total credits:
((72 × 40) + (65 × 20) + (68 × 20) + (61 × 20) + (70 × 20)) ÷ 120 = 68.0
The year average is 68.0%. The 40-credit project has twice the influence of each 20-credit module.
Layer 3: calculate the degree average
Many degrees give different importance to different academic years. Imagine a course where second year contributes 40% and final year contributes 60%:

(64 × 0.40) + (68 × 0.60) = 66.4
The estimated overall degree average is 66.4%, which commonly sits in the 2:1 range. The official outcome may still depend on university-specific classification rules.
Why a simple average can be misleading
If you averaged the five module marks in the example without using credits, the 40-credit project would count exactly the same as a 20-credit module. That would ignore the course structure and could produce the wrong result.
A simple average is only appropriate when every item carries the same weighting. Before calculating, ask three questions:
- Do the assessments within each module have different percentages?
- Do modules have different credit values?
- Do academic years contribute different percentages to the degree?
If the answer to any of these is yes, use a weighted calculation.
What to do with missing marks
There are two useful approaches, depending on what you want to know.
Current confirmed average
Include only completed modules or assessments that can be calculated properly. Clearly exclude incomplete work so that a blank mark is not treated as zero.
Predicted degree scenario
Enter realistic estimated marks for future work. Label these mentally or in your notes as predictions. Try several scenarios rather than relying on one optimistic number.
For example, you might compare a cautious scenario at 60%, a likely scenario at 65% and a stretch scenario at 70% for remaining assessments.
Should a failed or resat module be included?
Use the mark your university will include in the award calculation. A reassessment may be capped even when the raw score is higher. A compensated pass may also be recorded differently from the mark shown on an assessment screen.
Check your regulations for capped marks, replacement marks and whether all credits contribute to classification. When uncertain, ask your school office or academic adviser which mark is used officially.
How to find your degree weightings
Look for an official course handbook, programme specification or award regulations. Search within the document for terms such as:
- degree classification
- stage weighting
- award calculation
- credit weighting
- borderline
- reassessment
Use the version that applies to your programme and year of entry. Rules can vary between courses at the same university.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Averaging percentages without their weights. A 10% quiz should not count as much as a 70% exam.
- Ignoring module credits. Larger modules can have a much greater effect on the year average.
- Using year weights that total more or less than 100% without understanding why.
- Treating missing marks as zero. This makes a current estimate look artificially low.
- Using raw resit marks when the official mark is capped.
- Assuming the numerical average guarantees the final classification.
A reliable calculation checklist
- Every assessment has the correct percentage weighting.
- Assessment weights within a module total 100% unless regulations say otherwise.
- Every module has the correct credit value.
- Academic-year contributions match the course handbook.
- Predicted and confirmed marks are not confused.
- Resits and capped results use the mark included by the university.
- The final estimate is checked against classification and borderline rules.
