Universities often express degree weightings as percentages, such as 40:60, or as ratios, such as 1:2. These formats describe the same underlying idea: later or more advanced stages may have more influence on the final award.
There is no universal UK weighting. The correct structure is the one published for your programme and cohort. This guide explains the arithmetic so you can recognise and enter it accurately.

These are examples rather than recommendations. Some programmes count three or more stages, include a placement, or use different rules for an integrated master’s award.
How to convert a ratio into percentages
Add the parts of the ratio, divide each part by the total and multiply by 100.
Convert 1:2
Total parts: 1 + 2 = 3
Earlier year: 1 ÷ 3 × 100 = 33.33%
Final year: 2 ÷ 3 × 100 = 66.67%
Convert 1:3
Total parts: 1 + 3 = 4
Earlier year: 1 ÷ 4 × 100 = 25%
Final year: 3 ÷ 4 × 100 = 75%
Why the weighting changes the result
Assume a student has 62% in the earlier counted year and 70% in final year.

Because final year is stronger, a structure that gives it more influence produces a higher overall estimate. The reverse would happen if final year were weaker.
How to find your official weighting
- Use the programme specification, course handbook or award regulations.
- Check the document applies to your year of entry.
- Look for stage, level or year contributions.
- Confirm whether a placement or study-abroad year is included.
- Check whether the major project has a separate rule.
Search terms such as “award calculation”, “stage weighting”, “classification algorithm” and “contribution to final award” are often useful.
If they do not, check whether a stage has been omitted or whether the regulations use a more complex method.
Three-stage and four-stage degrees
Some degrees count more than two academic stages. An example could be 10% from year two, 30% from year three and 60% from year four. The same formula applies: multiply each valid year average by its percentage contribution, add the products and divide by the total counted weighting.
Do not compress a three-stage model into a two-stage preset. Add each contributing year separately so the calculation reflects the published structure.
What if first year does not count?

What if the handbook uses credits instead of year percentages?
Some regulations calculate from a selected set of credits rather than a simple stage percentage. For example, they may use the best credits from later levels or apply a profile rule. A standard year-weighted calculator may not reproduce that method exactly. Use the calculator as a planning estimate and follow the official algorithm for the final check.
Common input errors
- Entering 40 and 60 as 0.4 and 0.6 when the field expects percentages.
- Using a ratio as literal percentages, such as entering 1% and 2%.
- Copying another course’s weighting.
- Ignoring a counted placement or integrated-master’s stage.
- Using rounded 33% and 67% when regulations specify exact thirds. This usually has a small effect, but exact values are preferable.
