A target-mark calculation is useful when part of a module is complete and one or more assessments remain. It converts a broad aim such as “I want 70% in this module” into a specific exam or coursework target.

The method only works when the assessment weightings are known and the marks already entered are final enough to use. Moderation, penalties, caps or changed assessment rules can alter the official result.

The formula for one remaining assessment

First calculate the weighted contribution already secured. Subtract it from the target module mark. Then divide the remaining points by the weighting of the final assessment.

Required mark = (target module mark − secured weighted points) ÷ remaining assessment weighting

Use decimal weightings in the arithmetic: 60% becomes 0.60.

Worked example: coursework completed, exam remaining

Target a 70% module mark

Coursework: 72% worth 40%

Exam: unknown, worth 60%

Coursework contribution: 72 × 0.40 = 28.8

Points still needed: 70 − 28.8 = 41.2

Required exam mark: 41.2 ÷ 0.60 = 68.67%

A mark of about 68.7% in the exam would produce a 70% module result before any university-specific rounding.

Worked example: target a pass

Target a 40% module mark

Coursework: 55% worth 30%

Exam: unknown, worth 70%

Secured contribution: 55 × 0.30 = 16.5

Points still needed: 40 − 16.5 = 23.5

Required exam mark: 23.5 ÷ 0.70 = 33.57%

This mathematical result does not override a separate rule requiring a minimum exam mark. Some programmes require students to pass each component as well as the module overall.

When the result is above 100%

A required mark above 100% means the target cannot be reached through that remaining assessment under the values entered. It does not necessarily mean the module cannot be passed; it means the chosen target is mathematically unavailable.

Check the input before accepting that conclusion. Common errors include entering 60 instead of 0.60 in a manual formula, using the wrong assessment weighting or forgetting another remaining assessment.

When the result is below 0%

A negative required mark means the target has already been secured mathematically. You still need to complete the assessment and satisfy any minimum-component or attendance requirements. Do not interpret the calculation as permission to miss an exam.

Two or more assessments still remain

If several components are unfinished, there is no single required mark unless you make an assumption about how the remaining points will be distributed.

One approach is to use the same target mark for every remaining component. If 50% of the module remains and you need 32 weighted points, the average needed across the remaining work is 32 ÷ 0.50 = 64%.

Another approach is to set a realistic mark for one assessment and solve for the final assessment. This is helpful when a presentation is likely to be stronger than a timed exam.

For a 65% module target, the exam must provide 65 − 20.4 − 14.4 = 30.2 points.

A target is a planning input, not a prediction.

Use recent feedback, assessment format and available preparation time to decide whether the target is realistic.

Minimum component marks

Some modules require a minimum mark in the exam, laboratory work, placement or another component. A student could mathematically achieve 40% overall but still fail the module if a required component is below its minimum. Read the module specification and programme regulations before relying on the weighted total.

Penalties, caps and resits

Late penalties, academic misconduct penalties and resit caps can change the mark used officially. Calculate with the value the university will record, not the raw score you hope to achieve. See the separate guide to resits and capped marks.

Turn the number into a study plan

  • Read the marking criteria and identify what differentiates the target band.
  • Review previous feedback for repeated weaknesses.
  • Practise questions in the same format and time limit as the assessment.
  • Prioritise high-weight topics without abandoning minimum competency elsewhere.
  • Build a range: minimum target, likely target and stretch target.

Common mistakes

  • Using percentages as whole numbers in one part of the formula and decimals in another.
  • Forgetting that completed work contributes mark × weighting, not the raw mark.
  • Assuming the module has no minimum-component rule.
  • Using an unconfirmed provisional mark as final.
  • Rounding too early. Keep extra decimal places until the final answer.
