Module credits represent the size of a module within an academic programme. A larger module usually involves more learning time and contributes more to the credit total for the year. In a credit-weighted average, that larger module also has more influence on the result.

The common mistake is to add all module percentages and divide by the number of modules. That only works when every module has the same credit value.

The credit-weighted formula

Multiply each module mark by its credits, add those products and divide by the total credits included:

Year average = sum of (module mark × module credits) ÷ total credits

What happens if you use a simple average?

The simple average of the five marks is:

(72 + 65 + 68 + 61 + 70) ÷ 5 = 67.2%

That is 0.8 percentage points lower than the credit-weighted result because it treats the 40-credit project as if it were the same size as each 20-credit module.

How much can one module move the average?

The impact depends on the module’s share of the total credits. In a 120-credit year:

  • A 10-credit module represents 8.33% of the year.
  • A 20-credit module represents 16.67%.
  • A 30-credit module represents 25%.
  • A 40-credit module represents 33.33%.
  • A 60-credit module represents 50%.

If a 40-credit project improves by 6 percentage points, the year average rises by about 2 points because 6 × 40 ÷ 120 = 2. A 10-credit module improving by the same 6 points raises the year average by only 0.5.

Credit size measures influence, not difficulty.

A 10-credit module can still be challenging, but it contributes a smaller share of a 120-credit average than a 40-credit project.

Credits within a module are different from assessment weightings

Credits describe the module’s size within the year. Assessment weightings describe how exams, coursework or projects combine inside that module.

Two-layer calculation

A 20-credit module has coursework worth 40% marked at 70% and an exam worth 60% marked at 64%.

Module mark: (70 × 0.40) + (64 × 0.60) = 66.4%

Contribution to the year: 66.4 × 20 credits = 1,328 weighted points.

Calculate the module mark first. Then use the module’s credits when calculating the academic-year average.

What if modules are pass/fail?

A pass/fail module may contribute credits for progression without contributing a numerical mark to classification. The treatment depends on regulations. Do not assign an invented percentage merely to make the credit total reach 120. Follow the official award method or exclude the module from the numerical calculation if the regulations say it is ungraded.

What about compensated, failed or resat modules?

Use the mark that the university includes in the award calculation. A compensated pass may keep its original mark, while a resit may be capped. Credit status and classification mark are related but not identical. See the guide to resits and capped marks.

Should all credits in the year be included?

Often yes, but some regulations exclude certain modules or calculate from a selected credit profile. Integrated master’s, placement and professional programmes may use additional rules. The calculator assumes that the credits you enter are the credits intended to contribute to that year’s average.

  • Giving every module equal influence despite different credits.
  • Entering assessment weighting as module credits.
  • Counting a pass/fail module as 0%, which can incorrectly lower the average.
  • Using planned credits instead of the credits actually included in classification.
  • Entering a 40-credit project twice because it has two assessment components.
